Dorado Hall - Saturday afternoon (Christmas Day)

Heero sat on his bed, the glow from his laptop giving his tank top a faint blue-grey appearance. He'd not yet grown accustomed to the headboard facing this direction, but he'd decided he preferred not seeing the spare desk first thing in the morning. With the way things had been going, the missing Brian Decker would show up for the spring term. He was in no mood to adapt to a roommate now, not after having the room to himself all semester. He ignored the tapping at his door, but it opened unbidden anyway.

Drew walked in, whistling a Christmas carol that Heero recognized, if only from the bawdier version that had been playing on the stereo next door for the past two weeks. "Merry Christmas, Yuy," he said, walking over to Heero's desk, the one that was in his line of sight, and placing an object on it. "The invitation is still open if you're interested." He rubbed his nose and grinned at Heero. "Just empty it first."

Heero stared at the condensation running down the sides of the beer can Drew had brought him. He should have at least returned the sentiment, but at the moment he wasn't in the mood for either conversation or beer can hockey. He was under no obligation to be a gracious host considering Drew had walked in uninvited. It didn't appear that his guest expected an answer as he was already turning back toward the door.

Duo paused outside Heero's half opened door and placed the heavy package on the floor. He'd lugged that thing around for what felt like miles, even though he hadn't left the building. The flight of stairs he'd had to manage had really caused most of the damage he knew. This past week hadn't really been the best friends or family wise, and Duo knew that, as much as it was uncomfortable to be sticking his neck out and making the first move, it HAD to be him. Heero hadn't known that Duo was having 'issues' with himself and Quatre.

Hopefully the Christmas present would help in patching things up. If he ever managed to get it to Heero. On a whim he reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys. He paused for a second at the sound of footsteps, and stepped back from the door hurriedly - trying not to look suspicious and knowing he was failing miserably - as the door opened and Drew stepped out. Unbidden his eyes tracked to the still faintly visible bruise on Drew's nose and he nodded, pressing a finger to his lips. Drew seemed less than concerned with whatever Duo had planned.

Shaking his keys a bit Duo stuck his head around the door, noting with relief that Heero was now alone.

"Sleigh bells ring Heero," he smiled slightly, "Are ya listening?"

"I've no choice," Heero replied. "I still possess my sense of hearing." Feeling a bit guilty about being surly, especially since he and Duo hadn't seen each other since the debate, he added, turning his head to look at his visitor. "Is this a personal visit, or are you jingling your bells for everyone?"

"You should feel honoured." Duo grinned a bit wider, "I don't ring my bells for just anyone."

Feeling a bit more secure about his welcome now he ducked outside and hefted up his parcel, dutifully, if a little sloppily wrapped in pink shiny paper. "I come bearing gifts." He winked, "And yes, I am aware how loaded that sentence is."

Heero blinked at the oversized object that Duo was displaying. Any innuendo in Duo's words were ignored as he eyed the shape and size of the item wrapped in paper more fitting for a young girl's birthday present. The promise that the battle of the pink was still apparently alive and well wasn't what drew his attention to the gift and not to Duo's smiling face. He hesitated slightly, then asked "Exactly how loaded are we talking?"

"Depends what kind of loaded you're thinking of." Duo answered, placing the parcel down with care on the desk. "Money wise, I didn't spend a lot. Weight wise, It'll get heavier over time most likely, and innuendo wise, it's pretty much a damn mill stone already.

"Go on then." He nodded towards the rectangular shape eagerly. "Open the damn thing. Just don't complain about the best things coming in small packages once you see it."

Heero closed his laptop and swung his legs over the edge of the bed, walking to the very desk he'd been avoiding looking at all day. He toyed with the bow hanging off the top and reached underneath it to where the ends of the paper were gathered on top. He closed his eyes and pulled it straight down, opening them to see clear glass between the torn edges of the paper.

He used both hands to pull the paper the rest of the way off the front, then dropped to a crouch to stare straight into a pair of beady little eyes.

Duo's hand hovered for a second over Heero's shoulder and he bit his lip before deciding against it and diverting into his hair, ruffling it up rakishly. "Star crossed lovers." He grinned, "You know us perverts need to stick together."

It was a needless distraction, was what it was. He'd made far too many alterations already to accomodate the thing, and here it was, back again like a bad penny. He stood up and reached into the tank, lifting the turtle out and cupping it in both hands and running his thumb over its shell. He wasn't sure what how to respond and he kept his eyes fixed on the tank as he turned Cooter over and scratched at his belly. He glanced at Duo and then back at the tank, then reached over and pushed the paper away from the back of the aquarium.

The water level was low and the tank would need to be filled more, and he still had to plug in the heater to keep the temperature from dropping, although with the way the heat in the building had been the last two days, creating a sauna like environment, Cooter wouldn't likely notice a difference anytime soon. Heero stared at the floating turtle dock, and then turned around to face Duo. He held out the hand with the upside down turtle in it and brought it close to Duo's face.

"The pervert says thank you."

"Which one?" Duo asked as he reached out to scratch Cooter's belly. He'd never really thought of animals that didn't have fur as being 'cuddly' but he had to admit that Cooter was beginning to grow on him a bit. Feeling a bit of his old good spirits coming back to him again he looked up at Heero while still scratching lightly. "So is this by any chance another thing that's 'like owner like pet'?"

Heero felt one of Cooter's feet twitch against his palm as Duo rubbed the turtle's belly. He couldn't resist the urge to smile just a little. "Jury's still out on that one." He paused. "And I've already told you, Cooter is not a pervert."

"Did I say he was?" Duo acted affronted, still scratching. It was amusing to watch the little legs twitch, reminded him in a way of when he would scratch his dog's belly with his toe only to have the little guy fall over from trying to bring his leg up in bliss. "All I said was that us perverts need to stick together. Didn't mention turtles at all."

Heero shook his head, watching Duo's fingers stroke Cooter's belly. It was one of the things he'd discovered the turtle liked the previous weekend. He supposed it didn't matter how Duo had gotten his hands on the turtle again, or when he'd picked up the floating dock that Heero had his eye on. It wasn't the first time his actions had been hasty, and likely wasn't the last.

Duo was still petting the turtle, and he looked amused as he did so. Heero looked past Duo toward the bed on the opposite side of the room and then back at Cooter.

"Duo," he said, raising his eyes to meet Duo's. The scratching continued as Heero searched for the right words, and for a second he felt something brush against his fingers that didn't feel like Cooter's foot. "Merry Christmas."
